The ETIAS, or European Travel Information and Authorization System, is an online travel authorization that will soon be mandatory for Australians and citizens of around 60 other countries.
This system is similar to the US ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), which also pre-screens travelers to the US before they enter the country.
The ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization, not a visa. It applies to non-EU nationals who currently enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen Zone, with countries including Spain, France, and Switzerland.
This system collects personal details, passport information, and travel history before granting approval. Automated security checks screen applicants against databases like Europol and Interpol to detect potential threats.

Luckily the roll out of ETIAS has been delayed.
The ETIAS system is set to launch in 2026. ETIAS is expected to be implemented in the last quarter of 2026
